It should also be noted that these alliances that had been forged, the Entente and Triple Alliance, were the rival alliances of the war. After all, it was in the Balkans that Russia had commitments to Serbia. As such, with Austria-Hungary as German allies, the Russians could no longer be counted on. A so called Triple Alliance between these nations was forged. Germany’s response to this was to foster a closer alliance with Italy, as well as Austria-Hungary who had closer relations with Germany. The third nation of the Entente alliance was Russia, with the Triple Entente established in 1907. The Entente between them in 1904, the Entente Cordiale, was the beginning of what would become the Triple Entente.
